Early Terminations

There’s a lonely kind of pain as a psychologist.

It feels aching and raw.

I quietly wish it away but it’s also what makes this vocation holy.

I’m a guide joining my companion at the start of a trailhead

Where a meadow reveals alpine lakes and shimming white mountain crests.

It’s sweet seeing fresh eyes take in what’s before them.

Sweat crusted. Thanking bodies. Savoring breeze.

So how sad it is then, when someone turns around.

They end their journey with me when I was already dreaming of the destination.

And I wish them well.

And I hope their pockets are still full

Of stones and sprigs of wildflowers.
